In the far future, Earth becomes uninhabitable, forcing humanity to evacuate in colony fleets. To sustain the fleets, humanity creates plants—artificial organic lifeforms that produce infinite clean energy. Two brothers, Vash and Knives, are born with a special connection to plants and are cared for by Rem Saverem. When the fleet's computer systems malfunction, it crash-lands on the arid planet Noman's Land. Rem sacrifices herself to save the brothers, and Vash learns that Knives caused the disaster, seeking to kill all humans for exploiting plants.

Vash wanders the desert, branded an outlaw called 'Vash the Stampede' or the 'Humanoid Typhoon,' while Knives schemes under the name 'Millions Knives.' Vash seeks a peaceful resolution between humans and plants and encounters investigative reporters Meryl Stryfe and Roberto De Niro. The series focuses on Vash's origin, memories, and his time with Rem and Knives, exploring his character in greater depth than previous adaptations.
